something for everyone

My kids activities were at an all time high with fall baseball taking the forefront, then there re is the always activities like music and 4h filling in the gaps- but mostly its baseball all day every day.  We managed to build a Sukkah for Miles’ third grade Jewish Studies block, and it was a beautiful evening complete with a bonfire and soup and stories.  We attended some of the many offerings our area has for homeschoolers, including the history museum’s architecture walk and Billing’s Farm’s “putting up food” day.  We have also made our own fun with experiments of different plant fibers as well.

And finally, I knitted something!  It’s a plain tunic by Heidi Pickles and I love how sweet Willow looks in it.  It is so soft and warm and has, of course, cat buttons.

Fair wrap up

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne year later… Oh what a difference a year makes! I would sum up the fair as a huge success.  Those little birds (Modern Game for anyone who is interested) absolutely earn their keep- this year they helped the boys bring home a bag of feed, 25 dollars in cash, two beautiful rosettes and endless amounts of pride.

Other highlights this year were volunteering in floral hall demonstrating different fiber arts and earning free ride passes, scooping ice cream for 4H, bumper cars, being on the front page of the Valley News, getting photos taken for the Boston Globe, Arlo winning a bike, Rowan winning best in show for a needle felted gnome, Miles winning best in show for junior poultry and a pie, and taking our cousin to the fair!  It was an amazing and exhausting weekend and we can’t wait until next year already.

planning

This summer I made an attempt to plot things out a bit differently- trying to sketch out a little dotted line along our treasure map of a year.  I wanted our days to look a lot the same once “school” started, to keep the number of unfilled hours enough to let boredom seep in and the real creativity burst out, but not so long that the inevitable sibling squabbles get the best of me.  So I planned.  I planned and planned and planned.  And I really loved it!  The year began and so did we- a little morning routine lining our day with family time and routine and that magic Waldorf-y word- rhythm.  And lo and behold its working.

It is simple really, we just start the day off with chores and a walk, head back for some handwork, do a bit of math and writing and before we know it its lunch and everyone scatters in their own direction.

Good planning really does open up your time for more.  I am able to read again (and not just after hours), I’m finding myself with knitting in my hands almost every day, and the children are fighting just a bit less.  Seems good to me.  And planning has even led to some planned trips!  Camping!  Its been a beautiful August and September so far.  We are right in the thick of birthday season- four under our own roof this month- and of course fair season!  Today marks day two of the wonderful Worlds Fair, and I can’t wait to report back on it at the end.

a birthday boy

Four years ago I was noshing on blueberry crostata, waiting out intermittent contractions and the arrival of our incredibly sweet Jasper!  Oh my how time flies.  But, life without Jasper?  Did it ever exist?  He is just the most personable kind little soul.  And while he is a screamer, no doubt, we couldn’t love him more.  It’s entirely impossible.  Last night as we were falling off to sleep he whispered to me, “When my head tells my heart its time, and then it is morning, I will be four.”  I am not entirely sure what this means but its poetic and makes me smile and I want to remember it always.

I can’t wait to document todays events and try to post some pictures of his special day here.   I seem to have invited everyone I have seen the last 24 hours to eat cake in honor of our boy tonight.  So, with a borrowed sheet cake pan, and a lot of eggs and sugar I hope to please the neighborhood, and our little Jasper Ray too.  In the meantime, this is what we have been up to.  We made a hexagonal picnic table and then painted our bodies, driveway and the table too!  Our garden is tall and weedy and full of little delights to enjoy.  Summer is treating us so very well.

Still standing

Oh my three months?  Could it be?  Why yes… that sounds perfectly correct.  Three months since I have last written on this blog that I have kept for seven years!  That is quite a feat I believe.  In a world where this is so much to try and see and do, I have chosen this space for seven amazing years.  I will continue I am sure, but at a rate that is much slower than I previously kept.  Either way, here is my life in a nutshell.  One nostril above water, a little sweaty, a little crazy and seriously surrounded by so much love from some amazing children, friends, friends children, family and an incredible husband.
